As the school year approaches, it becomes festival, competition and audition season! That means there are so many great classical song selections for my students. I am always so excited to go through my library of books to have students prep for the school year. One book I use regularly is The Second Book of Mezzo-Soprano/Alto Solos because it is a great compilation of songs. Listed below are three songs I really enjoy teaching my students from this book:

Where Corals Lie

When it comes to song selections, Where Corals Lie is one of my favorites! The accompaniment makes it feel as if the singer is at sea and creates such an expressive piece! In addition to that, I work hard to teach students the importance of breath support with the long phrases of the piece! We work hard to focus on breathing from our stomach and the value of writing in breath marks so students are set up for success to sing this piece in its entirety! Once a student has it down, they love it because of how much fun it is to sing!

A Lullaby

A dark eerie song that helps students learn to sing in a minor key! When a student learns this piece, we focus on minor scales so that a student can feel comfortable singing this piece. In addition to that, there are some fun runs in this piece that students can learn to sing and have great breath support to sing the whole phrase!

What other pieces do you enjoy learning in The Second Book of Mezzo-Soprano/Alto Solos?
