When looking for a great piece, there are many options in the Singer’s Musical Theatre Anthology Volume 6: Mezzo-Soprano/Belter. Read through three of my favorite pieces to teach my vocal students.

I Just Want to Be a Star from Nunsense

When it comes to auditions and competitions, I tend to look for musicals that are out of the box. Nunsense has a great sense of humor and it is not overly done. Any student looking to add humor to their musical theatre repertoire would love working on this piece. In addition to that, this piece has a jazz vibe to showcase a singer who loves to belt it out! When teaching students this piece, I know if I have a strong alto with a sense of humor, it will be a fun piece!

Fly Fly Away from Catch Me If You Can

When it is time to be dramatic, “Fly Fly Away” is the perfect piece. This heartfelt piece is full of emotion about losing someone you care about causing the singer to portray strong emotions. When working on this piece, there are also moments for improvisation to cause students to make it their own. One important aspect about this piece is making sure to follow the score and not tracks you can find online. This is a challenging piece for a strong musical theatre singer.

A Part of That from The Last Five Years

Musical Theatre is all about storytelling and “A Part of That” displays the inner monologue of Cathy and her emotions about her marriage. Many students need to understand that even though their character is still in love, she is still hurting. That is definitely a challenge to portray and it is so valuable to analyze your character when singing musical theatre.
