A Student’s Guide to Summer Practice

Updated: Jul 26

Summer is always a very busy time. There are camps, vacations, and other fun activities throughout this span of time. Sometimes practicing your instrument can get tough with the busy schedule. Here are a few things that I do to encourage practice over the summer as a music teacher.

Practice Bingo

This summer I decided to try out a practice bingo for my students. Throughout the bingo there are fun different ways to practice and be involved with music over the summer! Some examples I had on my practice bingo are: practice in your pajamas, see a live music event, practice 7 days in a row, and more!

When I gave out the bingo, I made sure to have a fun prize for the students. As a teacher, I want to build a community, so when a student gets a bingo they will receive an invitation to a group lesson with pizza and ice cream. Then, I wanted them to do more than just one bingo so I said that for every bingo earned, there would be extra tickets into a raffle prize bucket. Throughout the group lesson, I will have multiple raffle prizes that are music related for the students to get excited about during the group lesson.

I know I won’t see students every week so this is great motivation to practice during the weeks I don’t see them.

Summer Performances

As a local musician, I perform at a lot of events in the community. Over the summer, I invite my students to perform songs that they chose at these events. This causes students to have a goal to complete over the summer and to learn something they are interested in. I noticed so much interest in music and an improvement on practice time because students are working towards a great goal!

Flexibility

Being a performer and understanding the business of summer, I know that it is important to be flexible. As a teacher, I understand that I will not see my students every week. I do encourage that I see students for at least 8 lessons over the summer to keep them practicing. It is important to be flexible as a private music teacher because life happens! Therefore, I understand the importance of flexibility.
