When I was learning to sing, I used the Teen's Musical Theatre Collection Young Women's Edition all the time for pieces. Now that I teach voice, I am excited to use the same book for my own students! Below are 3 pieces listed that are considered favorites for me to teach to my own students!
In My Own Little Corner from Cinderella
Every young student loves Cinderella, but most are familiar with the Disney classic and not the Rodgers and Hammerstein version on Broadway. I love to teach this piece so students understand that there are different versions of their favorite stories. Students get excited to learn a song from Cinderell as it is full of adventure and allows them to play a loveable character. When I was younger, I learned this piece and loved to act out her daydreams as portrayed in the piece.
God Help the Outcasts from Hunchback of Notre Dame
If I have a student who loves Disney, I try to pick Disney pieces that are a little more on the underrated side. As a voice teacher, I try to pick pieces that are not extremely popular for the times. When I notice a strong soprano singer, I will recommend this piece to them to work on their strong head voice. I find this to be a fun piece for students to learn in order to learn a Disney piece, but not one that is considered overdone.
I Have Confidence from The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music is a classic musical! For a strong belter, this song is perfect for a student to show off their skills as an alto. Students work on their confident acting skills when it comes to performing this piece which also helps them in a performance aspect. I believe if you act confident, you will be confident in your performance, sometimes the song choice and can help you with that!
