When it comes to teaching elementary students, I work hard to get them excited about musical theatre. One of my go to books to teach musical theatre to younger students is the Kids Broadway Songbook. When I was young, I used this book and now I get to use it to teach! Below are three songs, I find that I teach students regularly out of this book!
Castle on a Cloud from Les Misérables
When it comes to teaching musical theater, this is usually the first one I offer up to students. Les Misérables is a classic musical and this piece is in a great range for starter students. It is not too high or too low for students to sing. Finally, it has the acting quality of being a girl who creates an imagination to stay out of a hard situation. Students usually love to learn this piece and it gets them thrilled to continue to study musical theater pieces.
Born to Entertain from Ruthless
If I have a student who is full of energy, I pull this song out for them. Some students are very excited about the acting quality of pieces so this song is perfect for them. Throughout this song, there are various tap dancing references that cause students to work on strong actions with this piece. Overall, this piece is perfect for a belter who is excited to take on a musical theatre piece with actions!
The Girl I Mean to Be from The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden is a classic book and the musical adaptation is great to use for students. The Girl I Mean to Be is considered a more challenging piece because the melody line is not in the accompaniment. That means students must know their own part so confidently without relying on the piano accompaniment to play out their notes. I will start teaching this piece to a younger student who is ready for an advanced children’s musical theatre piece.
