As a vocal coach, I have so many books in my collection. My studio space bookshelf is full of music literature. One book I enjoy using is Singer’s Musical Theatre Anthology Volume 4: Mezzo-Soprano/Belter for my high school students. Listed below are three songs I enjoy teaching my students.
There are Worse Things I Could Do from Grease
Grease is such a timeless musical and if I have an alto who enjoys musical theatre, I will pull this one out from them to try. This piece helps a student work on their break and belter range. Another reason I enjoy teaching this song is because students have to work on singing from an emotional standpoint. Students have to work on their acting skills through their facial expressions over choreography and hand gestures.
I Can Hear The Bells from Hairspray
A great storytelling song is always fun to sing when it comes to musical theatre. I Can Hear The Bells focuses on sharing the imaginary love story Tracy has made up in her mind. This piece causes a student to express excitement and is full of large gestures which makes it fun to learn.
Gimme, Gimme from Thoroughly Modern Millie
The big show business song. This piece is truly a powerful piece for a singer that classifies themselves as a belter. Thoroughly Modern Millie is such a classic musical and it is a blast to work on with students. Finally, while working on this piece students must learn the importance of breath support and following your breath marks. This piece has many long phrases so it is so valuable for students to work on.
