Finding a great piece for a soprano is always fun! There are many options as sopranos progress because Italian arias start to enter the mix. One book I love to use to pick pieces for sopranos is Soprano Songs. Below are 4 songs I love to teach my soprano students:

Let me wander not unseen

If a soprano is looking for a challenge, but not in an foreign language. This piece works well based on its rhythmic patterns. The songs switches between 12/8 and 4/4 time creating a challenge for students to focus on their rhythms. In addition to that, there are many runs working with dotted eight and sixteenth notes for a student to focus on. Overall, it is a song that is a challenge, but not because it is in a different language.

A Lullaby

Another soprano piece in English, but the accompaniment does not help the singer at all. This student needs to be confident with their piece and understand the importance of owning your part. Students must know when to come in since there are no cues from the accompaniment. Once a student masters this piece, it is very impressive to showcase their confidence.

The Singer

A piece where it is mainly acappella. This student needs to be confident in their part since the piano is minimal. One of my favorite sections of this piece is the fa, la, la sections because a soprano can really show of their range and skill during this section. Even though this piece is shorter, there are many aspects of this song that make it challenge based on the fact that you are basically singing without an accompaniment.

How calm is my spirit (Ridente la calma)

A classic piece that I like to use to introduce singing in a foreign language for students. Many soprano pieces are in Italian so this is a great piece to start off students to sing. This piece is graceful and full of elegance for a sweet soprano singer. The melody is absolutely calming and makes a listener fall in love with the song causing students to enjoy singing this piece.
