During festival season, there are so many books and pieces to choose from to set students up for success. One book I enjoy using is The First Book of Soprano/Alto Solos Part II with students. Below are three pieces I love to teach students:

Danny Boy

Students who love to sing a story will love this piece! Danny Boy is an Old Irish Air that allows students to express a love story. The dynamics of this piece is a great way for students to learn expression and illustrating a story through song. The dynamics illustrates a soft, sad love song that is perfect for a student who wants to share a story.

A Legend

A classic piece by Tchaikovsky sharing a story of Christ. This song is great for a student loves to sing in the mezzo-soprano range. Students who are branching into the upper ranges will enjoy working on this piece because it can get them comfortable into the soprano range. Whenever I select this piece, I think about the vocal range of my student and what their goals are in lesson.

Beneath a Weeping Willow's Shade

If a student is looking for a challenge during competition and festival season, I will start with "Beneath a Weeping Willow's Shade." The rhythms in this piece tend to be more complex for a young singer. In addition to that the runs at the end create a great starting point for students dipping their toes into classical music. If I have a young voice student looking for a challenge, this is the perfect piece for them to try out singing runs.
