Over the weekend Devon and I took a trip to South Bend, Indiana to see my brother run a cross country meet. Not only did we watch him run, but we checked out the city. Here are a few of the local spots Devon and I visited.
Being in South Bend, Indiana there are a lot of proud Irish people, especially because of the Fighting Irish of University of Notre Dame. Devon and I found it only fair to try out an Irish pub. The Fiddler’s Hearth was a perfect Irish pub to try out for dinner! Every table was seat yourself with long tables so everything felt family style. I ordered the vegan shepherd's pie and Devon ordered the lamb burger. The food was clearly authentic and there was an Irish focus. In addition to that, there is live music every night which is a great touch!
Devon and I believe it is important to have a good breakfast, especially with a long day ahead of us. The Early Bird Eatery was a perfect spot for a great filling breakfast. The simple modern look created a welcoming vibe for customers. I ordered a chai latte and Devon loves black coffee. The Early Bird Eatery is known for its lemon blueberry pancakes, but I did not want something with that much sugar so I ordered the vegan hash. It was hearty and filling. The hash was full of vegetables and was a great breakfast. Devon ordered the ham eggs benedict which he loved!

After breakfast, we walked around the downtown of South Bend to check out some local shops. We walked past a store that is The World’s Largest Chocolate Store and we decided we had to step in! The store was full of homemade chocolate, coffee and treats! Attached to the store was a cafe and small restaurant so it can be open all day long. Devon and I loved looking at the homemade items.
Shops: Griffon Bookstore
If you are interested in looking for a great game or something interesting to read, the Griffon Bookstore is full of it! Lots of the games have a fantasy theme to them. Many of the books were interesting to look at as they were not regular reads, but books on history, philosophy, religion and many different kinds of dictionaries! It is definitely something to walk through and give a look!
Sightseeing: Notre Dame University and Basilica of Sacred Heart
Before my brother had to run his meet, we wanted to walk around the Notre Dame University Campus. It is absolutely gorgeous! We walked and looked at all the architecture of each building and loved wandering to see the different sculptures on the campus. We made our last stop to the Basilica of Sacred Heart which was absolutely stunning. We both took a moment to look inside the Basilica to admire the art and architecture of the building. Another exciting aspect was that someone was practicing on the organ when we visited so we got to hear it which was great!
